Here you can find kbps to Mbps and all you want to know about changing these data transfer rates. If you have come here in search for 1kbps to mbps or 1 kbps to mbps then you are right here, too. We not only have the formula, but also a calculator you want to check out. 🙂 We start with explaining what these units exactly mean. This is important because is some cases it makes a difference if the b in kbps is spelled uppercase or lower case. Keep reading to learn why.

What is kbps?
Kbps is a data transfer rate (DTR). A DTR measures the amount of digital units which is moved in a given time, here per second. What is kbps depends on whether the b is lowercase or uppercase. Usually, kbps means kilobit per second, but when then B is capitalized then kBps stands for kilobyte per second. Remember that kB ≠ kb.
Along the same lines, Mbps is short for megabit per second, in contrast to MBps which is used less often and denotes megabytes per second. The abbreviations for these units are kbps, kBps, Mbps and MBps. The decimal prefix kilo is always abbreviated with k as minuscule, whereas the the decimal prefix mega has as symbol M, as majuscule.
The symbols for these units are as follows:
- kb/s or kbit/s (Kilobit per second)
- Mb/s or Mbit/s (Megabit per second)
- kB/s or kbyte/s (Kilobyte per second)
- MB/s or Mbyte/s (Megabyte per second)
Convert kbps to Mbps
To convert kbps to Mbps you have to divide the speed in kbps by 1000 to get the value in the data rate unit Mbps. The formula is [Mbps] = [kbps] / 1000. Therefore, we get:
1 Megabit per second = 1000 Kilobit per second
For example, if you want to change 2048 kbps to Mbps we divide 2048 by 1000 to obtain 2.048 Mbps. As the ratio of kilo to mega is the same for all units we get 1 kBps = 0.001 MBps for kilobytes per second to megabytes per second.
If you want to change kBps to kbps, aka kbytes to kbits, supposed that the byte size is eight bits, then multiply the amount in kBps by eight. If you want to convert kbps to kBps, aka kbits to kbytes, divide the amount by eight, again under the assumption 8 bits = 1 byte.
In any case the easiest way to change kbps to mbps is using our converter at the top of this page.
About our Kbps to mbps Converter
Besides kbps to mbps you can also change from kibibit per second (Kibit/s) to mebibit per second (Mibit/s), that is converting the data transfer rate in binary prefixed units which are explained on our home page. Our converter at the beginning of this article will also change any input in binary prefixed units to decimal prefixes units, and vice versa. To learn about binary prefixed units visit our home page.

Converting kbps to mb is something usually related to Internet download speed, upload speed or the transfer rate of your modem or router. Yet, the conversion may needs to be made in connection with the transmission speed of data between any devices and locations. These days megabit per second is the ISP industry-standard, at the beginning of the Internet age it was kilobit per second.
